Collaboration with ISHKAR: Peshawar Table
For those of you who’ve visited our showroom, workshop, office space and café at the base of the iconic Trellick Tower, you may be familiar with ISHKAR, the inspiring social enterprise supporting craftsmanship in countries at war, with whom we share our space.
As a celebration of our shared passions for traditional craftsmanship and sustainable design, we have launched our first product collaboration, the Peshawar Table, a side table with a unique story.
The base of the table has been designed and handcrafted by our talented In-House Designer and Maker, Daniele Barco, using traditional carpentry techniques. Reflecting our long-standing commitment to the circular economy and sustainable design, the base has been handcrafted from maple that was generously donated by one of London’s most renowned cultural institutions, the Design Museum. It’s been an honour to give the beautiful wood a new life in this table, which nods to the rich heritage of our city.
Mirroring the delicate, elegance of the marble table top, the thin 10mm sheets of wood used by Daniele create a slender, contemporary design.
With an equally fascinating backstory, the table top has been produced by ISHKAR. Using the ancient art of pietra dura, the top has been handcrafted by Afghan artisans living in Peshawar, a region in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. Grooves have been carefully chiselled out of marble before being filled with precisely hand-cut pieces of eye-catching lapis lazuli and serpentine
The marble design has been inspired by the enduring connections in the region which straddles either side of the border between Afghanistan and Pakistan, which was drawn by the British with the Durand Line in 1896. Today, much of the region’s shared linguistic, social and cultural connections still remain.
If this limited edition table is too much to resist, you can order one from our online shop for £895 right here.
